History
Unibet was originally established in 1997 by Anders Ström, with the business first operating from Ström’s house in Earl’s Court, London. It obtained a permit to run a betting company and from 1998, Unibet started accepting bets over the phone. The next year, Unibet established its first-ever online betting website. It subsequently became Unibet Group PLC, Pontus Lesse was recruited as the new CEO and the business was given its first international gaming license in Malta.
Over the following several years, Unibet Group PLC grew rapidly. Its Unibet website expanded to accommodate 12 different languages and by 2004, the business had over 300,000 registered clients in more than 100 countries. It was also in the same year that the business was initially listed on the Swedish Stock Exchange.
In the following years, the company made several additional acquisitions, the most notable of which were Betchoice in Australia and Stan James Online. Earlier this year, Unibet Group Plc changed its name to the Kindred Group, to better promote its new multi-brand strategy. Since then, the business has grown to over one million registered users and has established several other betting and gaming brands in various countries across the globe. In the middle of November 2019, the Kindred Group went online with Unibet in Pennsylvania.
